Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens
NOVEMBER 20, 2004

Our November meeting took place at the fabulous Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens (HBG). What a fantastic place!
The Palm Society of Southern California last visited the HBG some five years ago and since then, The Huntington has built a new Botanical Center inclusive of a Children's garden, huge glass domed conservatory, and classrooms. Our meeting was held in the Alhmanson auditorium which was filled to capacity for the guest speaker, Myron Kimnack, curator of HBG for over twenty five years. Myron's presentation was on Subtropical Palms of the world, a subject which he will be publishing in about a year. The Palm Society of Southern California (PSSC) donated $1000.00 to help with the research

on this work and the slides covering some of the species in culture and in habitat were spectacular. The PSSC also donated to the Huntington several tropical palms for their new conservatory that is in the final stages of construction. We would like to thank the entire staff at the Huntington, especially Jim Folsom, Melanie Thorpe, Danielle Rudeen, Kathy Musial, and Dylan Hannon for the use of the facilities and being such gracious hosts.

Many things were accomplished and reported at the Board Meeting. The new format of the Palm Journal has as its key objective to generate new members. A gift membership brochure was also handed out and sent with the last Palm Journal (PJ). This is an easy way to give a gift to someone and which will help the Society continue to produce the quality Journal you receive and enjoy. The Board increased advertising rates in the PJ effective starting 2005. The new rates will

cover the page cost for such advertising. We also appointed a new web master Chris Stevens. Chris has a lot of web site experience and has volunteered her services to the PSSC.

This is my last president's message and I want to thank everyone that has supported the PSSC. It has been an honor to serve this group as the president and which has been a very rewarding experience for me. I personally will be spending more time in Hawaii at my nursery doing what I really enjoy and that is growing palms. I will continue on the Board as the past president. I wish the Palm Society of Southern California the best of luck and to continue promoting education related to the study of palms, their propagation, culture, conservation, care, development and enjoyment. This is a part of what it is all about as well as watching our palms grow.

Sincerely, Jerry D. Andersen PSSC President
