In 2001, the PSSC visited the
three-year-old gardens of John Boyer and Guy Young. If you were among those that attended that meeting, you probably remember that Guy and John are next-door neighbors with connected yards. Each garden contains over 100 different species of palms so it will be interesting to see how they have grown and filled their spaces over the past four years. John and Guy have done excellent jobs in creating fascinating tropical displays filled with surprises like:

Pinanga philippinensis - purple and orange
   crownshaft (6' Overall Height)
Burretiokentia viellardii (10' O.H.)
Pritchardia martii (6' O.H.) with odd twisting trunk

Triple Dypsis ambositrae (8'+ O.H.)
Archontophoenix purpurea
   and alexandrae (15' O.H.)
Wodyetia x Veitchia (15' O.H.)
Chambeyronia macrocarpa var.
   watermelon (10' O.H.)
Rhopalostylus baueri (15'+ O.H)
Caryota gigas (25'+ O.H.)

We will have a chance to see part of Guy's landscape project under construction which may spur on a few ideas for you to consider in your own gardens. Both gardens also showcase cycads, bromeliads (well over 100 different species), heliconias, tillandsias and other exciting tropical additions.

Please bring a side-dish or dessert. Hamburgers will be provided by John and Guy. Following lunch, there will be a presentation and auction so come ready to bid on palms of your choice!

From 405 North or 405 south, exit Brookhurst St. and head south toward the ocean for 3.5 miles. Turn right on Hamilton, pass the churches and turn left into the tract on St. John Ln. Turn right on Clearbrook Dr. and right on Archer Cir. And look for the large 10' Bismarkia nobilis on the left side.
