Palms for Southern California:
A Quick Reference Guide

OSBORNE, REYNOSO AND STEIN, 2000

Reviewed by Geoff Stein --
Modestly speaking, this is the best literature on palms for Southern California you can buy (not modest enough?). This is a very practical guide for the Southern California palm grower with a nearly complete list of all the palms that can be grown in Southern California along with some cultivation comments. I'm not sure how useful this booklet will be to those living elsewhere in the world but I personally recommend it highly to anyone interested in palms. By the way, this update is wonderfully illustrated, if I say so myself.

Highly recommended, as a one-time purchase, is our palm pamphlet called "Palms of Southern California" for about $10.00 (the cost of the new edition is still under review). Most members carry it everywhere they view palms because it is essentially a golden nugget of information. There are many man-years (person-years?) in the development of this pamphlet; you simply don't want to find out the hard way the information readily available in this pamphlet.

If I could have only one book or booklet on palms it would be Palms for Southern California. It has more useful information relative to growing palms in southern California than all my other books put together. (I have many books.) The majority of palm data I get from printed material comes from this one source. And it is in a very convenient, concise format. This 8.5" x 11" booklet tells the normal or expected trunk height, trunk width, overall width, leaf length, speed of growth, lowest temperature, ability to tolerate dry heat, etc. -- for California. This is often very different than in the tropics. But, for those who do not live in southern California, it should still be very valuable. A lot of this cultural information is not readily available otherwise, and if you live in a similar climate then its perfect. Especially for the price, Palms for Southern California is an absolute must have.
